Clear majority support carbon trading: poll

The poll conducted last weekend shows 88 per cent of Australians want the Rudd government to introduce an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), while 58 per cent said they were prepared for higher energy bills.

On the question of whether Australia should act irrespective of the actions of other countries, 61 per cent said an ETS should be brought in regardless.

The latest poll results, published in The Australian today, also shows Prime Minister Kevin Rudd continues to enjoy a healthy margin of support over Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson.

On the question of preferred prime minister, Mr Rudd stands at 62 per cent which was down three per cent from August 22-24.

Dr Nelson has just 16 per cent support, up two points.

The two-party-preferred split sees 56 per cent in support of Labor compared with 44 per cent for the coalition.

Satisfaction with the prime minister fell three points to 54 per cent, while Dr Nelson's satisfaction rating role from 31 to 35 per cent.
