Anne Fulwood reviews video calling

Every picture tells a story - but we also know that a picture is worth a thousand words - and I've just realised that I could have saved my breath, and spared my friends an over-excited earbashing - if only I'd known a bit more about video calling on my Telstra Next GTM mobile phone.

Recently I have been privileged to travel to all of Australia's State capital cities while working on the Telstra Business Awards. Yes, it's a coincidence that I've been doing some work for Telstra, but it has given me a wonderful opportunity to explore and experience some of the highlights of each city.  An outstanding indigenous art exhibition in Canberra and an exclusive international exhibition at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art were a few highlights. But there's more! How about an AFL brush with fame in Perth, and a Wallaby brush with fame in Brisbane!

Now, I'm the sort of person who uses technology on a need-to-know basis. Necessity is the mother of all my technology interaction! (if I may re-construct an old saying).

In other words, I need to use email and SMS on my mobile phone - and I'm very quick and well practised at all of those skills.

However, because I'm either a luddite or I'm just 'time poor' - I generally don't go exploring the other capabilities or features on my mobile phone because I'm too busy getting everything else done in my life.

So, there I was in the foyer of a Brisbane hotel this past week, trying very hard not to get over-excited, or ask for an autograph, or just lose my cool in the presence of the Wallabies - Australia's Rugby Union stars who were about to take on the All Blacks in the Tri-Nations decider. I could have been the envy of my rugby-loving friends by video calling them and showing them live video of Stirling Mortlock or Loti Tuquiri hanging out in the hotel.

I realise now, that it was as easy as pressing one button on my mobile phone and I could have shown  them 'live' from my mobile.

I wandered through a city mall in Perth - alongside Collingwood coach Michael Malthouse and a couple of Magpie players! I could have been on the video call to share it with my Collingwood tragic supporter friends - lots of bragging rights on that day!

Can you imagine the possibilities for video calling?  All at the push of a button.

Say good night to your children with a video call if you're away. Video call someone for their birthday.  What about that dress or the pair of shoes for which you need a second opinion - go on girls, you know you do!!  And as for the renovation you're doing or the new house you want to buy - I could almost be there with a video call. You get the idea.

The Telstra Next GTM network can deliver - for my mind it's worth exploring the possibilities. Including, video calling with ease.

Telstra has many phones which make video calling easy.  On most phones you can simply select video call from the calling options when you select a contact from your address book or type in a number.

Of course there's a cost, and as usual there are many options available to us. One of the Telstra bonus options, My Hour, which is available on a range of Telstra's plans, offers the first 20 minutes of most video and most voice calls nationwide free, every day, during a nominated hour.

I would suggest you head into the Telstra shop and have a chat to the sales assistants about it - or go online.  Or give Telstra a call and talk to a consultant.

If you already have a plan in place, chances are you can make some adjustments that suit you and your lifestyle.

See the Telstra website for the video call rates associated with your mobile plans (Click on the Telstra.com link on the right of this article).

Telstra tells me that the Next G network covers 99% of the Australian population. That's more coverage than any other 3G mobile network in Australia, according to Telstra. They also urge us to get the most from the Next G network, and if video calling is one of your priorities you might like to check out the range of compatible Next G mobiles. Telstra has given some of them a 'Blue Tick' because they have great coverage in regional areas. One Blue Tick handset that's extremely easy to video call with is the LG KF390.

I had a play with the LG KF390 phone, and it has a touch pad rather than raised keys.

The possibilities are endless, why not give it a go?

Regards
Anne Fulwood
