Sony launches the world's most compact Full HD camcorder

Developed using Sony's "High Definition To Go" design concept, the Memory Stick-based TG1 is a pocket-sized, Full HD camcorder created to capture high definition video while on the go. Pure titanium is incorporated for the first time in a camcorder chassis for a lightweight yet robust construction. The casing consists of a premium hard coating, which is significantly harder than the normal industry standard, to increase scratch-resistance and allow for maximum use of the camcorder with minimal wear and tear.

Measuring 32 x 119 x 63mm and weighing just 300g, the TG1 delivers Full HD 1920 x 1080 video recording and captures still images of up to four megapixel resolution on various Memory Stick Duo media.

"As the leader in high definition camcorders, Sony is always looking to develop its range of camcorders whilst being innovative in form and functionality," said Di Shepherd, Handycam Senior Product Manager, Sony Australia. "The TG1 is the perfect combination of the two, boasting technological features such as Face Detection, Face Index and Film Roll Index in a compact and stylish unit."

"The HDR-TG1 has been developed especially for those with an active lifestyle, who need a lightweight, robust and stylish camcorder to capture those everyday and unexpected moments."

The TG1 integrates Sony's original ClearVid CMOS sensor with Exmor-derived technology and the BIONZ image processing engine, delivering vivid, crisp movies and photos with high sensitivity and low noise.

Face Detection technology has been incorporated for both video and photos, identifying up to eight faces in the camcorder's LCD frame. It automatically allocates more pixels to a detected face during the AVCHD encoding process, optimising focus, exposure and colour for natural-looking skin tones.

The D-Range Optimiser suppresses "blackout" in subjects and "whiteout" in brightly lit environments, ensuring more natural, evenly-exposed pictures, especially when shooting high contrast and strong backlit scenes.

The in-built zoom microphone also allows the TG1 to focus sound capture on any specific subject that the camcorder zooms in on, ensuring a clear audio recording in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

Users can enhance the HD viewing and sharing experience with an increased range of connectivity options. BRAVIA Sync enables viewing of video and images from the TG1 directly on any compatible BRAVIA LCD TV with an optional HDMI cable using just the BRAVIA remote, minimising the hassle of using multiple remote controls. The PhotoTV HD feature allows photos on the TG1 to be displayed on any compatible BRAVIA TV in Full HD quality, automatically optimising photos for more vibrant detail with true-to-life colour reproduction.

Similar to its predecessors, the TG1 has a simple interface that allows users to shoot, review and edit images with ease. Specific sections of video footage can be separated and removed with the divide function. Besides the conventional visual and date index, videos can also be searched easily by Film Roll Index that displays thumbnails of scenes captured at specific intervals, or by Face Index which organises scenes by faces that have been captured using Face Detection technology.

The TG1 also features a One Touch Disc Burn button on its Handycam Station that enables transfer of videos directly to an AVCHD or DVD format disc. Alternatively, the Easy PC Backup feature creates a backup copy of new videos on a PC automatically.

Should users wish to share their footage with others around the world, users can use the YouTube Upload feature in the supplied Picture Motion Browser Software to upload Handycam footage from a PC to the web. By simply selecting the clip you wish to upload, Picture Motion Browser 3.0 will automatically convert the file footage to an appropriate format for uploading and will then even open the YouTube upload page for you.

The Handycam TG1 camcorder from Sony is available in Australia from May 2008
