The RACQ's annual fuel price survey found several regional centres delivered lower petrol prices than the traditionally cheaper, more competitive petrol retail market in southeast Queensland.
RACQ spokesman Gary Fites said Brisbane petrol was more expensive than any other mainland capital, with motorists paying an average of 117.8 cents a litre for unleaded fuel.
Toowoomba led the regions with the lowest pump prices - motorists paid an average of 112.2 cents a litre for unleaded last year.
"Even on Brisbane's 'cheap Wednesdays', Toowoomba's daily average pump prices were lower on 30 weeks last year," Mr Fites said.
"In other words, for most of last year, Toowoomba motorists could be virtually guaranteed prices cheaper than Brisbane's without having to worry about which day of the week to fill up."
He said Mackay (115.9 cents), Warwick (116.2 cents), Kingaroy and Goondiwindi (both 117.1 cents) all enjoyed lower petrol prices than southeast Queensland.
"It appears there has been a real battle for local market share in the Toowoomba and other centres where prices have been keenest," Mr Fites said.
Rockhampton had an average unleaded petrol price of 121.6 cents while the Gulf of Carpentaria town of Normanton was one of the most expensive places to fill up, with unleaded costing 155 cents a litre on average.
