Fourth generation Toyota Prado lands down under

It is launched in Toyota's 50th year in Australia and in its 30th year as commercial vehicle market leader.

New-generation LandCruiser Prado will carry the make past 150,000 Australian deliveries by the end of 2009.

LandCruiser Prado is more fuel and energy efficient than its predecessor, with economy figures as low as 8.3 litres per 100km*.

It is also more powerful.

It breaks the 200kW barrier for the first time with a 13 per cent increase in power from its upgraded V6 petrol engine.

The model mix has been streamlined and for the first time a three-door model has been added.

Dual VVT-i has been added to the petrol engine.

Toyota has moved to make safety, operational and comfort features standard on all grades as a means of redefining value.

The recommended retail prices of the entry level turbo-diesel vehicles in three- and five-door are substantially below the $60,000 ceiling defined by customers.

Both are equipped with electronic aids such as ABS, stability control, and uphill and downhill assist as well as a comprehensive seven airbag package and air-conditioning.

"LandCruiser Prado has taken a value stance," Toyota senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said.

"Its entry level vehicles present value beyond market expectation."

The range introduces driver and performance aids such as Kinetic Dynamic Suspension (KDSS) for the first time.

It also introduces a forward-facing camera with dashboard monitor to increase rough terrain visibility.

LandCruiser Prado is longer, wider and - significantly - lower than its predecessor.

Chief engineer Makoto Arimoto and his team clocked more than 100,000 test kilometres in Australia.

Among rugged four-wheel drive vehicles, LandCruiser Prado has led the medium SUV market for all but one year since its first full sales year in 1997.

This year, Toyota is the leading participant in the medium SUV segment with Prado and Kluger accounting for 34.9 per cent of all deliveries (YTD October).

Toyota estimates the medium SUV market will this year achieve close to 70,000 sales - almost double its size when third-generation Prado was introduced in 2002.
